I saw this as I walked out the door yesterday morning. It was hanging on the wall of my house, about a couple of centimeters long. It was actually facing upwards, but I've inserted the photo at ninety degrees so that the enlargement (click on the photo) shows the whole bug. It's a Jerusalem cricket; lives on decaying vegetable matter and likes to stay out of the sun. It was on a west-facing wall.
They seem to come in a wild variety. Here are some photos of one like mine, but here are a few others too. Apparently they are also called potato bugs, probably because they may be found with potatoes in their search for eating materials.
Lovely and shiny. Look at the sky reflected on its carapace!
