I first noticed a new neighbor earlier in the summer. She located her web just inside the roof of my portal, just outside my front door. She usually comes out only when it's dark, but last week she made an appearance before sunset, so I was able to get some photos. Her web is fairly impressive and getting larger, but I haven't managed to get a good photo of it yet. It consists of a traditional orb web, with a complex backup arrangement of threads to catch the insects that are drawn to my porch lights. she's probably an orb spider (Araneida), but I can't get any further in identification than that. Her abdomen is about a centimeter across, and it's highly ridged.
She's only got three legs on her right side--must have lost the other somehow. That will allow me to identify her if she holes up somewhere for the winter and emerges next spring.
The next is a garden spider from Oregon, another orb-weaver. Looks like she's enjoying her lunch.
And yet another, from volcanic fields in Russia's Kamchatka peninsula. This one looks like a wolf spider. She's easier to see if you click on the photo to enlarge it.
