As the days get shorter and cooler, and as the plants die off in my yard, it's nice to have some things to look forward to next spring.
I transplanted this datura from where it had come up (along with four other volunteers!) around my desert four o'clock. Too much goodness all in one place! Daturas have long carrot-like roots, it turns out, and they really, really wilt when you transplant them. But it's been over a month now, and it looks like this one has managed the transition.
One of my desert four o'clocks was doing well until it mysteriously disappeared. But two oval leaves are now coming up just about where it was. Desert four o'clocks have enormous roots, just about filled up the containers I bought. There's another one out there somewhere too...
And here's a California poppy, along with some other things that I think must be from my wildflower sowings. California poppies usually manage to overwinter and bloom in the spring.
