The imperfections in the delivery of health care services in Canada are often used as an argument against instituting a single payer system in the United States.
This argument has no substance whatsoever. There is no earthly reason to duplicate a flawed Canadian system in every or any detail. Surely it’s possible to devise a system that’s more efficient than Canada’s and more humane than America’s ludicrous excuse for a safety net.
How about the system that’s already offered to employees of the U.S. government, including Congress? The key is universality. It’s open without exception to every U.S. government employee, and yet it also makes room for competition and private enterprise, which keeps costs low and benefits substantial.
How much more humane can you get?
How much more American can you get?
What’s more, this system seems to satisfy our representatives in Congress. How much longer can they refuse to extend the highly satisfactory and affordable coverage they enjoy to all their constituents?
