President Bush’s latest three appointments (John Bolton, Karen Hughes and Paul Wolfowitz) are getting two kinds of endorsements:
He/she is close to the president and therefore brings the President’s attention and power to the position.
At least she/he is not someplace where he/she could do even more damage.
It may be the need to say something, anything, positive. Or the need to be hopeful in the face of utter disaster.
An excuse that goes with these is that the President is placating his conservative base.
Please.
That can be done in less dangerous venues. It’s time to consider that maybe, just maybe, as we see this pattern unfold, President Bush believes that these people will do what he wants done in these positions.
To maintain hope, we can consider that sometimes people grow into their jobs out of narrow ideology.
