For those in the US who are getting tired of Terry Schiavo’s dysfunctional family and Michael Jackson’s leisure-time habits, there are two stories that are barely being reported in our media: the unrest in Kyrgyzstan and an explosion at a petroleum refinery in Texas.
Those two stories have been at the top of Google News all morning, and they are continuously updated, so you might want to check there for more than I can offer in this post.
In Kyrgyzstan, protesters have seized the capital building and possibly the government. President Askar Akayev seems to have resigned and fled to Kazakhstan. More information and photos can be found at Eurasianet, and The Guardian today has a Q&A on the background, along with photos and far better coverage than the American media is offering.
Fifteen people have been killed and 100 injured in an explosion at a BP petroleum refinery in Texas City. Once again, The Guardian is covering the story far better than the US media. This is likely to increase the rate of rise in the price of gasoline in the US and might be used as a scare story by the government to justify further actions that might be justified in terms of their effect on terrorism.
If they ever pull their attention back from Terry Schiavo.
