There are about 28,185 nuclear weapons in the world today. Most of them belong to the United States (10,000) and Russia, (17,000) but a thousand or so belong to Britain (185), France (350), China (410), Israel (100), Pakistan (30-50), and India (50-90).
At the height of the cold war, during the 1960s, the United States and the Soviet Union were producing thousands of weapons every year. By 1970, both were willing to agree to
negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament, and on a Treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control.
(Article VI of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty)
A colleague of mine says that this means zero, ASAP. I suspect that could be agreed to, if nuclear weapons could be disappeared instantly, written out of our Matrix. Let’s see: delete(nuclear weapon, plutonium, uranium enrichment, atomic bomb, hydrogen bomb). Hm. I just checked Google, and it appears that didn’t work. I’ve never been much of a programmer anyway, let alone a hacker.
